"The Zpacks Classic bag is the most versatile I have tested. It can be used as a quilt in warmer temperatures, with the zipper partially open or on the topside in chilly temperatures, and as a mummy bag equivalent (using a down hood) when its cold."
Zpacks Classic Sleeping Bag review by Will Rietveld
The Zpacks sleeping bag is essentially a zippered quilt; or the best of quilts and sleeping bags and nothing else, and let me just say: It works!

Zpacks Sleeping Bag Review
"Just a little update for you. After 2 years of hard use using your quilt
in floorless Shelters and bivy sacks, that thing is still going strong and
has a ton of loft left in it. I love this quilt"
-Cameron Meier
"I just returned from my thru-hike of the John Muir Trail. Your 30
degree quilt performed wonderfully. I was plenty warm most nights,
although a little concerned at first. It got into the low 30's a few
nights and I'd say the average low temp was around 38 - 40. The 30 degree
rating is definitely an accurate rating especially when compared to bags
or quilts of the same rating. And, as I'm sure you know, some
manufacturers are more honest than others. I'd definitely take this quilt
with me again in temperatures estimated to be in the 30's." -Tyler F.
"My constantly-cold wife has been using your 20 degree quilt since January
2012, in temps down to 25 degrees, and hasn't been cold a single night.
She loves it!" -Austin
"My 19 ounce, 20 degree bag that I bought from
you gave me an edge when it came to weight and pack volume. We were
forced on many occasions to sleep out in some rather wet dewy conditions,
and while I frequently woke up with a healthy layer of moisture on my bag
and gear, the dry sacks never failed me and the sleeping bag always stayed
warm. It also dried out super quick. You must already know how effective
your products are in the field, but regardless I wanted you to know what a
difference they made in my backcountry experience." -Timothy W.
"Just got back from a two week trip in the Southern Rockies and had all
kinds of weather. Have to say that your sleeping bags worked fabulously
and far exceeded our expectations. Thank you for making such great (and
light) gear." -Rob H.
"Just wanted to let you know that my bag performed superbly on my Cascades
trip. I was super snug and actually preferred not having a hood if the
truth be known. We climbed Shuksan via the Fischer's Chimneys and
Southeast Ridge and I can honestly say I needed some good sleep (it was
tough!) so I really really appreciated being warm and my big pack being
lighter. Thanks again for making this one happen for me!" -Viki T.
"I just wanted to let you know what a superior product
your company makes. I just finished a hike of the arctic circle trail in
Greenland and you bag performed flawlessly. I hardly noticed it in my
pack and it was warm. The ability to use as a quilt kept me ventilated
when I got too warm. I was gone for about a month and slept in your
bag in ranges from the polar ice cap out to the coast. After that, I did trips
to Iceland, the mountains around my house, and everywhere in between. It
was perfect. I currently have the 10 degree standard, long bag (it is warmer
then 10 degree in my opinion). There are very few things I would change
about it. I can't say that about most gear. I
will be ordering a new model in the near future for myself and my wife." -Davy H.
" I successfully completed a NOBO PCT hike, starting May 19th and
ending October 29th amidst the glorious snow. I used your 30* long /
standard
quilt and stuff sack pillow from start to finish and couldn't be more
pleased with the performance!" -Seth B.
"Camped in the back yard last night as it hovered around 10 degrees. Wanted to give
the new 10F bag a try. 40 mph wind gusts had the tent rocking a bit. I had
to remove layers to dial in the warmth and the temperature rating was for
me just right and then some. So in the end I have now saved around 1.5
lbs off my old sleeping system!" -Chris B.
"The bag that we originally got was a little on the cold side for me (not
the bags fault- as I get older I find that I just sleep colder). You guys
took the bag back and sold me a warmer one for just a little more. I was
extremely impressed with your level of service and the quality of the
replacement bag. I've taken it out several times and have slept very
comfortably in it. You guys are fantastic and make great stuff!" -Sincerely, Kemper S.
"My new Duplex tent and 10 degree bag were awesome this past weekend in
Michigan. It got down to 7 degrees and I was the only one of 6 who didn't
complain about being cold. Thanks!" --Kevin R.
"I can't tell you how happy I was to get my new 10F sleeping bag! I've
already used it on two short trips and it has exceeded all my
expectations. From years of working at a high end outdoor retail store I
can say with confidence that this bag blows every big name brand out of
the water, at a reasonable price too." -Eli B.
"I just wanted to let you know that I returned from my JMT hike on August
11. I had lots of weather for those two weeks. My 20F sleeping bag kept me
warm and dry! I was so thankful for this bag. Thank you so much for
working with me!" -Diana H.
"I have to repeat what I tell everyone: your sleeping bags and other
products, and your service, is the best in the industry. Ive been using
my new Solo bag all summer and still dont believe how comfortable it is
for sleeping and how feather light it is for carrying. Thank you for
delivering a major quality of life improvement on the trail!" -Peter N.
Bobcat completed the triple crown (AT, PCT, CDT) in September 2014. "My
Zpacks sleeping bags have over 6,000 miles on them and they're still going
strong.
This photo
was taken on Texas Pass above Cirque of the Towers in the Wind River Range
of Wyoming." -Bobcat
"I bought a 20 degree, standard, long sleeping bag from you last year. I did
about 2100 miles of the CDT and it performed very well. (Lots of rain in
Colorado and Wyoming). I had to supplement with a few extra layers on a
few cold nights, but nearly every day it was plenty warm. Also, love my
Duplex tent. For 20 ounces, its a palace. Never failed once in many
nights of rain. You guys make good stuff." -Chuck S.
"Your 10F degree bag is one of the best equipment purchases that I have
made that has by far exceeded my expectations. I was camping for 3 nights
north of Montreal in the Laurentian Mountains, and tested the sleeping bag
at -4F. I was sleeping inside a tent so I am not sure what the temperature
inside was, but I was expecting a long freezing night. I used my down
pants and my puffy, but after 2 hrs in the bag I had to remove them as I
was too hot. I like the shell material of the sleeping bag, very thin, and
seems to be very strong." -Gilles B.
"Ive been using one of your 20F quilts for a year now and Ive been super happy
with it for trekking in Sardinia, paddling in Norway and climbing in the Alps
this winter (with all my clothes on of course). Absolutely outstanding
equipment!!! I suggested my mother to buy one and she has been using her own in
Iceland last summer." -Ruggero A.
"Feedback on my 20F and 10F sleeping bags. I find both great: light and warm. I
have used both several times at the temperature ratings, and always felt cozy
warm. I do use them in a tent, with your bivy which adds several degrees of
heat. I have never used the zippers. On my head I have a fleece balaclava and
your Goose Hood when below freezing. There were never cold spots. Thank you, you
make really good stuff!" -Anne G., Switzerland
"Just wanted to let you know that my custom quilt came out perfect. I love it.
I've used it a dozen or so nights and when zipped up it has kept me warm into
the low teens (F) in only a base layer, socks, and a beanie. As a quilt, I love
how I can either keep the down over my torso or, on particularly warm nights,
let it fall to my sides. It's the most versatile quilt I've ever owned. Plus,
it's magnificent to see such a huge thing covered with beautiful fabric and
know it weighs so little. A down puff sneaks out occasionally, but nothing
crazy. I'll be recommending your bags to friends and family. Thanks! You guys
nailed it." -Jason W.
"The 20F sleeping bag you made for me kicks ass... have used it camping
primarily in New England in cold weather. Not exactly dead of winter, but cold
shoulder season." -George G.
"I'm going to pass on my 20 degree bag to my wife. It now has over 7,500 miles
on it, CDT, AT and quite a few shorter hikes in-between, and it's still in
almost new condition. Loft is great and I'd use it again on our Camino trip this
summer, except that this gives me a good excuse to buy a new summer bag. That 20
degree bag has held up much better than the WM 20 I used on the PCT in 2010,
which was basically shot and had lost most of it's loft after just one thru
hike. A point I've made many times when recommending you guys on the PCT-L and
Facebook sites. You have good stuff." -Shroomer
"I LOVE my 20F sleeping bag -- and I'm showing it off to everyone -- it is AWESOME in quilt mode or half
zipped on > 35 degree nights." -Raphael M.
"I wanted to tell you all how much I love my Zpacks 20 degree bag! I have used
it over 30 nights so far and it is far beyond what I could have expected. It
seems so much warmer than a 20 degree bag and the shape and cut is the best I've
experienced. Anyways, thanks and keep up the great work!" -Sam V.
"I got your exceptional 20 degree down sleeping bag for my PCT thru-hike in
2013. Loved it and except for one incredibly chilly night in the desert where it
went down to about 10 degrees, it was a complete trooper. After a good cleaning
post-trail, it still is my primary sleeping bag here in the PNW." -Paul B.
"IMHO your sleeping bags are the only bags Ive ever used that are actually true
to their ratings, and Im a cold sleeper so others might think the ratings are
off. But for me they are perfect. As a restless sleeper I cant sleep in mine
zipped up, so I added my own elastic straps to keep it snug around me for cold
nights, and that worked great." -Amy F.
"Just thought I would drop you a line. Spent the past few weeks in the Cascades
using the 30F bag. Its amazing. My girlfriend had already ordered a 10 degree
after seeing it in use."-Mike H.
"I wanted to let you know that I finally got to use my 10F sleeping bag. It was
perfect, exactly what I needed. The size was right, and it was like sleeping in
a pillow. I was camped at about 11,500 Ft on Mt. Rainier in my tent with light
clothes and 40 mile an hour winds, in the teens at best. Was nice and cozy
warm!" -Bradley D.
"The sleeping bag I bought from you last year is fantastic. Perfect with the
down hood! Extremely comfortable sleep, so thank you!" -Russel W.
"I received my bag in time for my trip. This was a 50+ mile trip on the JMT from Onion Valley to Whitney Portal.
I can't tell you how much I love my new 10F sleeping bag, it was perfect for the high elevations." -Lenora S.
"Just letting you know that the sleeping bag I got from you guys is performing
magnificently!" -Catherine B.
"I just wanted to send another huge thanks your way! I absolutely LOVE, LOVE,
LOVE my sleeping bag!!!! It is such a great thing when I buy a piece of gear
that just works and there really isn't anything I would change about it; it does
the job I need it to, pretty much exactly how I want and I can rely on it to do
that on every trip! My sleeping bag from you is one of those items. I rave about
it to anyone that cares about such matters :). This is my second season with it
and so far it has been on several technical traverse where weight really
mattered. Here is a
photo of me in my bag from this past weekend at our ridge
bivy along the Tantalus traverse near Squamish, BC. Thanks again for a great
product! Feel free to post my comments!" -Lorraine C.
"I just wanted to send you a short email saying how much I appreciated the 20
degree sleeping bag I bought from you. I have taken it out for several trips now
and love it! Most recently was a 40 day expedition I lead in the Wind River
Range in Wyoming. It kept me warm extremely well even when camped on glaciers
and high alpine environments. I was warm when others were not. I couldn't have
asked for a more perfect sleeping bag for that trip as well my other personal
trips. I just want you to know that I hold your company in high regard. I now
brag about your gear that I own to all the other guides and my students. I look
forward to buying more of your products in the future, especially one of your
tents! Thank you." -Kevin K.
"I just want to tell you how much I like my new sleeping bag, which I received a
few weeks ago. I carried on an overnighter last night and I can tell you that
for the first time in my hiking career, I didn't freeze. It feels like a light,
silky cocoon of warmth and being able to pull the extra length over my head
works vastly better than any hood. Great product, thanks so much!" -Marie G.
"I took your 20 degree sleeping bag on a short backpack on the PCT. The bag is
so beautifully constructed and was perfect; I love it! In warmer weather I could
unzip the bottom for ventilation and later in the night I could bring the bag
around me. Thank you for your conscientious advice and help in figuring out what
I needed." -Janet C.
"I wanted to take a second and tell you how awesome you all are. I recently
ordered a broad, xx long 30 bag and a hammock tarp from you. They work
perfect. I'm 6'3 and built like a refrigerator so you can imagine how hard it is
to just find a bag I can slide on like a body condom let alone one that is
comfortable. Your bag is actually the first one that has ever fit me and oh god
is it comfortable. I was nervous about ordering from a company that does not
offer up their phone number, but your customer service is top notch. Thank you
for getting my gear to my before my trip." -Clinton P.
"My sleeping bag is amazing. Nothing that light should be that warm. The separate hood is a stroke of genius." -Johhny E.
"We recently completed our 2015 AT Thru-Hike. The 20 Degree sleeping bag was outstanding! I love the quilt/bag.
It's very versatile and light enough to carry the entire thru-hike. My only comment (in hindsight) is I wish I would have ordered
it longer to pull over my head. It fits perfectly around my neck, as you describe on the website.
I may purchase a longer 10F version, as I became a "colder" sleeper the more weight I lost along the trail.
I'd also purchased the down hood to pair with the bag and my down jacket." -Adrian F.
"I used the Zpacks 10 degree sleeping bag during my Pacific Crest Trail
thru-hike, from May to September 2015. I was always warm! Many nights I was
actually too warm, so I simply slept with the bag unzipped and it was perfect."
-Carly M.

"I just wanted to thank you for making my Zpacks 10 degree sleeping bag. I used
it on the entire PCT in 2015 and was never disappointed. The bag worked
wonderfully even when very damp in the north cascades, and in temps below
freezing. It was hands down my favorite piece of gear, and the only item of my
big three that I didn't replace on trail as I was downsizing and lightening up.
I also appreciated the patient customer service I received prior to ordering my
bag; I later found all the answers to my questions on the FAQ page, but someone
personally took the time to email me the answers anyway. You definitely proved
your good reputation within the hiking community is no joke!
Everyone I talked to on the PCT who had your gear was very pleased with it. I'm
glad I bought the bag I wanted, I truly believe it to be the best for
long-distance hiking. It's also in perfect condition even after five months of
continuous use." -Kat H.
"I have just returned from the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal and it was extremely
cold in the high altitudes. My new 10F sleeping bag and hood performed
exceptionally well. I did not have to use an extra blanket at any time. It is
the warmest & lightest sleeping bag I have ever owned, and I have tried 5 in my
endeavor to get the warmth I need. My search is over, thanks a lot." -Anne G.
"I got a sleeping bag from you a few months ago. Love it, excellent product.
It's just as warm as my old 20deg but at half the weight and a bit less packed
volume. It was my first quilt-bag experience too. I never realized how
restricting a mummy style bag was. I also like not sliding off my ground pad all
night." -Tyler P.
"Just wanted to drop you a line and update on the 30F I picked up. I've had it well below its
reported comfort range in combination with a lightweight down jacket. Very impressed." -Mike H.
"I also just want to say thanks for being such a kickass company and making such innovative gear.
My 20 degree bag has accompanied me on countless trips and at least a couple thousand miles so far and is
my most cherished piece of gear. You rushed it to me so that I could have it in time to climb the South Sister in 2014.
It was an amazing trip that I will never forget and hopefully the bag will be accompanying me to climb the rest of the
Cascade volcanoes in the future." -Sam V.
"I've been sleeping in my Zpacks sleeping bag basically every night for the last 6 months or so as I travel round Australia.
It's been absolutely one of the best and most important bits of kit in my backpack." -Rowan
"I'm loving the 20F down bag you made for me. From the High Sierras, to SW desert, to Tibet, w/ the Goose Hood it's sooo good!" -Ken B.
"I purchased one of your amazing sleeping bags 3 years ago and I am as in love with it now as ever. New Zealand, Utah, JMT thru hike......all of it accomplished with the luxury with this amazing bag." -Jean K.
"I love my 10 degree sleeping bag! I have been trying to get a photo that would be worthy of your facebook posts but so far have
fallen way short- please know that your light weight gear is responsible for letting this middle aged woman get out a lot more
with a featherweight base weight and sleep comfortably above treeline." -Kristen C.
"My sleeping back still confuses me. I think it is stuffed with clouds, sugar plum fairies and some sort of magic.
I can hardly feel the sleeping back on top of me, yet on the nights when it got into the 20s, I was toasty warm.
Next day, cram it down into a very small stuff sack and it fit nicely into my pack.
I am looking back at all the good bags I have had in the past and am kicking myself." -Tim M.
"This year I got to complete the dream of a PCT thru-hike. Two thirds of the way through I realized my tent and sleeping bag (not from Zpacks) were inadequate for Oregon and Washington weather.
Though I was out of cell phone service much of the time, I was able to complete orders for replacement gear with Zpacks online and via email.
They rushed my order to a delivery point along the trail, allowing me to complete the trek in comfort.
Love the Duplex tent and broad, x-long 20 degree bag." -Aaron K.

I've used the sleeping bag for a number of trips now and it has been durable, lightweight,
and met my expectations with regards to warmth." Watch a

"I bought your 30F quilt for my NZ TA South Island traverse. The hike was superb and so the quilt.
It's my favourite piece of hiking gear!" -Christoph D.
"Just wanted to say thanks for a solid product!!!!! Ordered a 10 degree bag from you for my 2017 PCT thruhike......
and it is my new fav piece of gear, never got cold at all.... even had some nights in the low 20s.....
thanks again and keep up the good work!!!" -Jake F.
"I camped on top of Max Patch in my
Duplex Flex tent
and 5F Zpacks Sleeping Bag in January. The temp got down to -1F and the wind chill was -15F. The top of Max Patch looked more like the surface of the moon.
I posted a video on my YouTube (
Plug-it In Hikes), but it really doesnt do it justice.
The sleeping bag worked perfectly. I was also wearing my Goosefeet pants, socks, hood and jacket along with my Patagonia Thermal Weight Capilene top and bottoms and my Black Rock down beanie.
To be honest I was on the edge of sweating. It was very toasty." -Benny Braden
